Description
RIVIÈRE (CHARLES-FRANÇOIS DE RIFFARDEAU, MARQUIS DE). Signed document. Bannegon in the department of Cher, 11 October 1814. 1/2 p. folio, red wax armorial seal; margins dusty with small tear. "We Charles François, Marquis de Rivière, ambassador of His Majesty the King of France to the Sublime Porte, Marshal of the King's camps and armies, Commander of the Royal and Military Order of St Louis, aide-de-camp to Monsieur [the future Charles X], certify that by virtue of the orders with which the King was pleased to honour us on 4 October this year, WE HAVE TODAY CONFERRED THE CROSS OF THE ROYAL AND MILITARY ORDER OF ST-LOUIS TO MR NOËL JOSEPH CLEMENT, squadron leader of the Royal Gendarmerie at the residence of Nevers, after having received from him the required oath... " Noël-Joseph Clément (1757-1828) became deputy for Nièvre in August 1815, and remained so until May 1818. ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE CONTREREVOLUTION, LE MARQUIS DE RIVIERE (1763-1828) began his military career under the Ancien Régime. During the Revolution, he emigrated and became particularly attached to the service of the Count of Artois, whom he followed wherever he went. He carried out numerous missions in France, notably with Stofflet, Charette, Pichegru and Cadoudal. He was shipwrecked, arrested twice, and then remained on parole until the end of the Empire. Made lieutenant-general in 1814, he was appointed ambassador to Constantinople in 1815, but the return of Napoleon I delayed his posting. After various postings, notably to Corsica, he finally left for Turkey in 1816 and remained there until 1819 - it was he who bought the Venus de Milo, which he offered to France. On his return, he was made a duke and peer, and governor of the Duke of Bordeaux.
