Historical background:
Our man was painted by Johann Jacob de Lose on two occasions, the first during the German campaign (1805) during which
Lose also painted the commander of his corps, Bernadotte. Vagnair was already a Commander ("Golden Eagle") of the Legion of Honour.
The second was probably at the end of 1808, before his departure for Spain, where he died.
Biography:
Frédéric Vagnair- Marizy (1765-1811)
He entered the Conflanshussards regiment on 11 February 1779 as a cadet, becoming second lieutenant on 2 January 1784, lieutenant on 27 May 1788 and captain on 29 April 1792. On 1 July 1792, he joined Kellermann's legion, and on 4 October 1793, was promoted to squadron leader. This legion became the 7th regiment of hussars on 19 June 1794, and he became its brigade commander on the 24th of the same month. Employed in the army of the Rhine from Year III to Year V, he distinguished himself on 5 August 1796 at the Bopfingen affair, where he was wounded by three sabre blows, as well as on 16 March 1797 at Willingen, where he had a horse killed beneath him. From 1798 to 1799, still at the head of the 7th Hussars, he served in the army of Helvetia; in 1800-1801 in the army of the Rhine, then in 1802 in Hanover. He was promoted to brigadier general on 24 March 1803. Placed on inactive status on 2 April, he was given command of the Nimegue camp on 2 May 1803. He was made a knight of the Legion of Honour on 11 December 1803 and a commander of the order on 14 June 1804. From August 1805, he campaigned within the 1st corps of the Grande Armée led by Marshal Bernadotte. He commanded the first light cavalry brigade of the Kellermann division, a post in which he took part in the battle of Austerlitz, during which he was wounded. From October 1806 to 1808, he commanded a brigade of light cavalry in General Beaumont's 3rd dragoon division. He took part in the Prussian campaign and fought in the battles of Eylau, Heilsberg and Friedland. He was created a Baron of the Empire on 22 November 1808. In 1808, General Marizy was posted to the 2nd corps of the Spanish army, where he commanded a brigade of dragoons under the orders of La Houssaye. He was then posted to Marshal Mortier's 5th corps. He was wounded again at the battle of the Arzobispo bridge on 8 August 1809. Whilst marching along the road to Bohonal, he was targeted at Talavera la Vieja by a group of Spanish francs-tireurs led by the guerrilla Feliciano Cuesta. Wounded in the thigh, he died of his injuries on 1 February 1811.
