Made of wood, mother-of-pearl, bone and ivory, this model of the Holy Sepulchre complex is a rare example of the handicrafts produced in Palestine between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. A meticulous assembly of several pieces of wood, the structure of our model is inlaid with mother-of-pearl elements whose iridescent reflections are enhanced by the black bracket that secures them. The entire basilica is adorned with a semi-square pattern punctuated by a rich repertoire of geometric motifs including rosettes, star-shaped medallions, radiating motifs and friezes of lozenges alternating with tongues. To highlight the details, certain elements of the building are made of dark wood, bone or ivory. Thanks to an ingenious system of movable and removable elements, the interior of the building reveals an equally refined décor of mother-of-pearl inlays and carved details in dark wood, ivory and bone.
