Historical background:
Our painting illustrates a heroic episode in the French Campaign.
In 1814, as the coalition troops invaded the Gâtinais, the
chatelain of Augerville, Joseph Prévost, organised the local resistance.
Montfort's painting depicts the brutal clash between the Cossacks,
light cavalry with spears, and the elite gendarmes of the Imperial Guard,
recognisable by their high bear hats. In the foreground,
the charge pushes the invaders back towards the moat of the castle, whose
silhouette emerges from the smoke of the battle. Antoine Alphonse
MONTFORT is implementing the precepts of his master, Horace
VERNET (1789-1863), particularly in the execution of the intensity
of the confrontation. Just as close to Théodore GÉRICAULT
(1791-1824), the artists shared a common love of the horse,
allowing the transcription of a spirited movement, profoundly
Romantic.
