Description
Early 19th century French school "Elisa Bonaparte, Princess of Lucca, Grand Duchess of Tuscany". Large oval miniature on ivory depicting Elisa three-quarter-face, wearing a white muslin dress and a stole over her shoulder, against a mountainous background. white muslin dress and stole over the shoulder, against a background of mountainous landscape. Signed "Daniel Saint" lower right Framed in gilt brass, chased with palmettes and foliage. Framed in blackened wood. 9.8 x 8 cm. B.E. Daniel SAINT (1778-1847), considered to be one of the greatest French miniaturists of the 19th century. Pupil of Jean-Baptiste Regnault then Augustin and Aubry. He painted many portraits of the Bonaparte family (Empress Josephine, Napoleon I, Queen Hortense), the sovereigns of the Restoration sovereigns (Prince Eugène) and the July Monarchy (Charles X).
