Workshop of Jean Urbain GUERIN (1761-1836, France) Portrait of General Kléber Gouache on card 22 x18 cm Circa 1798 There are several replicas of this portrait (cf. cat. exp. Miniatures, gouaches,estampes en couleurs françaises et anglaises, 1750-1815, Paris, BibliothèqueNationale, 1906, no. 175; G.C. Williamson, Catalogue of the collection ofminiatures the property of J. Pierpont Morgan, London, 1906-1908, vol. IV, no. 626, pl. CCXXII; M. von Boehn, Miniaturen und Silhouetten, Munich, 1919, pl.XIII) and a preparatory study sold (Paris Drouot, 12 December 1990, no. 114, repr.). Our portrait, which is probably still in its original frame, is a workshop replica similar to the one on display at the Musée de l'Armée. Biography: Jean-Baptiste Kléber (1753-1800) was an illustrious French general born in Strasbourg in 1753 and assassinated in Cairo on 14 June 1800. He was supreme commander of the French army in Egypt after the departure of Napoleon Bonaparte. He is shown here wearing his command belt around his waist.
