19th century FRENCH SCHOOL, entourage of Baron François GERARD Portrait of Blanche Sampayo, née Buffault (1799 - 1879) On its original canvas (Belot) 66 x 55 cm Two labels on the back with the identity of the model Provenance : Anonymous sale, Montauban, Hôtel des Ventes, 30 March 2014, (Me Monteillet), n°219, reproduced, (with its counterpart Portrait de Marie Cécile de Bonneuil, épouse de François du Bouzet). Biography: Blanche Sampayo was the daughter of Philippe Jean-Baptiste Buffault, a banker and former businessman of the Countess du Barry, and Marie Michelle de Bonneuil, whose mother of Creole descent was an inspiration to André Chénier and a famous royalist agent during the Revolution. Blanche Buffault married Antoine de Sampayo (1795-1841) in Paris in 1817. Born in Cork, he was the son of the Portuguese ambassador to England. They had four children. Blanche Sampayo bequeathed several paintings to the Louvre, including the portrait of her maternal aunt, Laure de Bonneuil, Countess Regnault de Saint Jean d'Angélys, painted in 1798 by Baron Gérard.
