Historical background:
After landing on 27 July in the Bay of Aboukir, the French contingent headed for Alexandria. Rear-Admiral François Paul de Brueys d'Aigalliers was in charge of protecting the French fleet, which was being pursued by the English. The formation of the French ships in line, which was supposed to provide offensive support for the troops on land as well as extensive defensive cover, proved catastrophic. Admiral Horatio Nelson launched the offensive as soon as the French positions were discovered and managed to get some of his ships to pass between the French ships' coasts: the ships were caught in the crossfire. At nightfall, the flagship Orient exploded. The defeat was total, with 13 of the 17 ships lost. English domination of the seas was established for several decades.
