Description
Mortuary mask of Emperor Napoleon I after Antommarchi. In bronze, with medal on the neck. Remains of markings on the sides "Masqu...arch", "Par le Richa". (accidents, missing neck and sides). According to family tradition, this mask was discovered in the rubble of the Tuileries in 1871 by Major General Charles Nicolas Peaucellier (1832-1919). 19th century. Provenance : Peaucellier family. Historical background: In 1833, Doctor Antommarchi launched a subscription campaign for the Emperor's mask, supported by other exiles such as Bertrand and Gourgaud. The bronze model cost 100 francs, while the plaster model cost 20 francs. Charles Nicolas PEAUCELLIER (1832, Prussian Rhineland-1919, Paris), French engineer and officer, known for having invented the first flat mechanism transforming a circular movement into an exactly rectilinear one. A graduate of the Ecole Polytechnique (class of 1850), he made a career in the French army as an engineer officer. He reached the rank of Major General in 1888 and was made a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour in 1894.
