308. François Ferdinand d'ORLEANS, Prince de JOINVILLE, (1818-1900). Two percussion shotguns, two shots, numbered "3" and "4", magnificently decorated and chased (from a series, with differences in the decoration). *Rifle numbered "3": Round barrels in table, in fine damask, marked on the band "LE PAGE ARQer du Roi et du Prince Royal", engraved with thunderbolts of foliate scrolls. En suite engraved breech tail with winged dragon. Front lock signed "LE PAGE", "ARQer du Roi" and round-bodied hammers, decorated and chased with foliate scrolls and winged dragons. Finely chased steel fittings in the same decoration. The trigger guard is inlaid with the initials "FO" under a gold princely crown, and decorated below with an anchor and a dolphin. Matching buttplate. Finely checkered walnut stock. Wooden ramrod with brass and iron screw thread end. Calibre: 18.8 mm. Overall length: 125 cm. Barrel length: 85 cm. *Rifle numbered "4": Identical to No. "3", with the same dimensions and calibre. The hammers, locks and fittings are decorated with the same foliate scrolls in sequence; however, unlike the rifle numbered "3", the tail of breech, locks and trigger guard are decorated with a devil instead of winged dragons. Rifle no. 3 is dated "A1841" and numbered "4045". Rifle No. 4 is dated "A1841" and numbered "4046". Both pairs of barrels are stamped "LE" under the crown. Minor traces of use on the stocks. Biography: François Ferdinand d'Orléans, Prince de Joinville: Third son of Louis-Philippe I. He married Dona Francisca de Bragance in 1843, Princess of Brazil and Portugal, daughter of Emperor Pedro I of Brazil. They had three children, including Pierre d'Orléans, Duke of Penthièvre. A seafaring prince and traveller, in 1840 he took part in the expedition to repatriate Napoleon's ashes.
