Biography :
William Charles ROSS, English miniature painter considered one of the best of his time. Awarded first prize by the Society of Arts at the age of thirteen, he studied at the Royal Academy and exhibited there from 1809 to 1859. He quickly achieved great success and became the official miniaturist of Queen Victoria in 1837, who knighted him in 1843.
Ross painted mainly on ivory, some of them large, such as the portrait of Napoleon III or that of Marie Caroline de Bourbon-Siciles, Duchesse d'Aumale (1822-1869), with her children, held by the Windsor Royal Collection, or the portrait of King Louis-Philippe and Madame Adélaïde at Saint-Cloud (1841).
