Description
Léon COUTURIER (1842-1935). "Halte en campagne de cuirassiers soignant un chasseur d'Afrique blessé à la jambe sous le Second Empire". Large oil on canvas. Signed lower right and dated "1881". Important carved gilt frame. 130 x 196 cm. B.E. Provenance : - Exhibited at the 1881 Salon, n°564 "Le récit". - Private collection Biography : Léon COUTURIER (1842-1935). A student of Danguin at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon from 1860 to 1864, then of Cabanel in Paris, he made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1868, winning a 3rd class medal in 1881. Decorated in 1898, he was awarded a bronze medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris. He painted subjects as varied as battles, scenes from the 1870 war, scenes from the lives of French fishermen and sailors, landscapes, harvest scenes, still lifes, etc.
