Description
Beautiful and important column that supported one of the cradles and the cradle curtain for the KING OF ROME, then the PRINCE IMPERIAL at the Château de Saint Cloud.
A green lacquered wood spindle column on a gilded base, decorated with a frieze of hearts, resting on a wide tripod base in green lacquered wood and gilded frieze, adorned with three gilded winged claw feet (three wings missing).
It is surmounted by a Corinthian capital in carved gilded wood, decorated with acanthus leaves, supporting a beautifully carved eagle with spread wings in gilded wood.
On the column, two large hanging irons and a note written in pen (partly missing):
"Column, surmounted by an eagle which supported the curtain of the cradle of the King of Rome. Later used for the cradle (...) Imperial Prince son of .... From cha.... St. Cloud from where .... withdrawn before ... 1870-1871. "
