Description
Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX (1827-1875) The Prince Imperial and his dog Néro Group in patinated bronze, titled on the terrace "S.A Le Prince Impérial", signed on the side, located Tuileries and dated 1865, bears a crown in bas-relief on the back, a crowned F on the side, Height 70 cm Note. The only son of Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie de Montijo is shown here accompanied by the Emperor's dog. The sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux knew the eight-year-old prince well and gave him drawing lessons. The prince is shown here without imperial attributes or official clothes. This portrait, commissioned in 1864 and delivered in 1865, was produced in various sizes, in bronze, plaster, clay and biscuit. Even after the fall of the Second Empire and the tragic death of the imperial prince, killed by Zulus in South Africa in 1879, the Manufacture de Sèvres continued to sell his portrait under the title Child with a Dog. The original marble was exhibited at the Tuileries and followed the imperial couple to England during their exile. Bibliography.
