Our cup, made by the Nymphenburg porcelain manufactory, is one of a series of "Jasmine" cups featuring portraits of the Bavarian royal family. Founded in 1747, the manufactory moved in 1761 to the north of Nymphenburg Castle, the summer residence of the prince-electors and later kings of Bavaria from the House of Wittelsbach, from which Auguste-Amélie of Bavaria (1788-1851), wife of Eugène de Beauharnais, descended. It is based on the famous portrait painted by Joseph Stieler, one of Eugène's favourite artists at the time, the Duke of Leuchtenberg. Numerous cups in the collections of the Porcelain Museum at Nymphenburg Palace in Munich and the Bavarian National Museum bear witness to this production, such as the one bearing the portrait of Auguste-Amélie of Bavaria.
