Born in Paris in 1844, Édouard Frédéric Wilhelm Richter was a French Orientalist painter. He initially enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague before completing his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, where his teachers included Ernest Hébert and Léon Bonnat.
Our portrait appears to be a reduced version of an 1876 salon painting which features in a large composition by the artist (dated the same year) and was sold at Christie’s on 24 October 2007 (lot 128).
‘Who is this piquant Mephistopheles, flamboyantly red from the tip of his cock’s-feather pen to the tips of his poulaine shoes? Beneath the bodice, or the purple corset, we discover a beautiful, heaving bosom that is in no way masculine, any more than the hips, pelvis and thighs of this charming, fanciful Mephistopheles, who would surely have had a very different influence on Faust’s life. ‘Congratulations, Mr Richter, on your good taste in this witty and charming quip.’ Excerpt from Théodore Véron, *Mémorial de l’art et des artistes de mon temps*. The 1876 Salon. (2nd yearbook), published by the author, Poitiers, Paris (1876), p. 66.
