Description
Hans I Rottenhammer (1564–1625), workshop of Diane and Actaeon Oil on copper. H_22 cm W_25.5 cm (Heavily oxidised original varnish, earlier restorations). Our painting is a workshop copy by Hans Rottenhammer, derived from a composition known from a drawing held in a private collection (Sotheby’s, 23 January 2001, lot 130), as well as from an oil on copper of comparable size (Sotheby’s, 14 October 2020, lot 149). Rottenhammer, one of the first German painters to specialise in easel painting, enjoyed great success during his stay in Venice in the early 17th century. His compositions were widely circulated thanks to studio copies, which helped spread his work across Europe; some of his paintings were collaborative works with other great artists such as Jan Brueghel the Younger. Our painting is also known from other studio versions, notably the one held at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, as well as an engraving attributed to Hans Rottenhammer and Jan Brueghel the Younger, which was sold at Artcurial on 14 November 2016 (lot 40), which sold for €24,000. These various versions, like our own, differ mainly from the original in their often altered backgrounds. Expert: ARTÉON - Expert: ARTÉON
