This model is also described in one of the ‘red notebooks’ written by Henry Panier, co-founder of L’Escalier de Cristal. (Annyck and Didier Masseau, D. Masseau, *L’Escalier de Cristal: Luxury in Paris 1809–1923*. Monelle-Hayot Edition 2021, page 286)
Jean-Jacques Pannier, from the canton of Balleroy in Normandy, arrived in Paris in 1766. During the First Empire, he was living at 13 Rue du Bac, ‘as a family man’.
He held the privilege of being one of the Emperor’s suppliers, to whom he delivered large quantities of silk stockings at a price of 18 francs each. Among Jean-Jacques PANNIER’s children was a son, Augustin Benjamin (1800–1850), who married Louise Launay, with whom he had two children, Louise and Emile (1825–1892). A partnership was formed between Pierre Isidore Laroche and Émile Pannier; on 16 November 1852, a deed was drawn up before a notary stipulating that a company named ‘Lahoche et Pannier’ would be established. In 1863, when Lahoche retired from the business, Émile Pannier remained the sole director, but the dual name remained in use for a few more years.
It is noted that in 1867, during the famous World’s Fair, the surnames were reversed, with Pannier’s name now preceding that of Laroche. Various marks, stamps and labels were affixed to the products of the ‘Escalier de Cristal’. The family archives contain two types of rectangular adhesive labels dating from the second half of the 19th century, referring to the ‘Pannier-Lahoche’ partnership, one of which was probably affixed to our pedestal table. (Annyck and Didier Masseau, D. Masseau, *L’Escalier de Cristal: Luxury in Paris 1809–1923*. Monelle-Hayot, 2021, p. 237).
