This large male figure study is the work of the painter Charles Édouard Chaise, created whilst attending the drawing class of Jean Charles Lagrénée, known as Lagrénée the Younger (1739–1821), under whom he studied prior to 1778. He won second prize at the Prix de Rome in 1778 with *David Condemning the Amalekite to Death, Who Brings Saul’s Diadem*. Works by this Neoclassical painter rarely appear on the market.
