Description
A half-moon-shaped chest of drawers made of oak, inlaid with rosewood and amaranth veneers, boxwood fillets, and finely chiselled and gilded bronze. It opens to reveal two drawers with recessed crossbars and two side panels. The front features a wide frame decorated with an acanthus frieze, accentuated by a apron. The recessed corners are embellished with sunflowers.
The sides are similar. The upright panels are adorned with faux fluting and openwork panels featuring a garland of oak leaves. They rest on sheathed legs with reserved decoration, enhanced by triglyphs and set-in feet. Lock plates and pull rings are set on mascarons. The top is crowned with a Sarrancolin marble slab moulded with a cove moulding.

After working as an independent craftsman in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, Antoine Héricourt set up his workshop on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré and became a representative of his guild, then its chairman the following year. His extensive body of work, highly prized by both French and foreign clients, consists of finely crafted furniture, chiefly ‘Transition’ chests with projecting fronts, and Louis XVI chests, often in a half-moon shape, made of veneered wood and mahogany of the finest quality and fitted with finely chiselled bronze fittings. He also produced a few pieces finished in lacquer or varnish in the Chinese style.
