Description
A pair of candlesticks in gilded bronze and Carrara marble. A nymph holding a cornucopia and a seashell from which six luminous branches, shaped like lily stems, emerge. Beside the nymphs stands a Bacchic putto in front of a tree bearing grapes, and a putto seated on a dolphin, blowing into a conch shell. The plinth is in the form of fluted columns with chiselled bronze finials at the top and bottom, as well as floral garlands, resting on a square base with recessed, rounded corners.
Paris. Louis XVI period, c. 1775.
H 98 cm.
(Gilding worn. Crack in the base. The light-emitting branches require repair; some need to be reattached. Bronze decoration missing from the lower base. Holes in the seashell and cornucopia (previously fitted for electrical wiring).
