FRANCE – Kingdom of Navarre A gold shield bearing a porcupine – Henry III of Navarre (later Henry IV of France) Saint-Palais, c. 1575–1589 Obverse: A crowned shield of Navarre bearing three stylised fleurs-de-lis, set upon an ornate cartouche. Visible circular legend: HENRICVS III D G FRA… NAVAR… (Henry III, by the grace of God, King of Navarre). Reverse: A crowned porcupine, the traditional emblem of the royal house of Navarre at that time, surrounded by the religious motto: CHRISTVS REGNAT VINCIT IMPERAT (Christ reigns, conquers and commands).
