FRANÇOISE CAILLES
René Boivin, Jeweller
Paris, Les Éditions de l'Amateur, 1994. Hardback, 399 pages.
(Minor wear to the dust jacket)
A jewellery expert, Françoise Cailles reveals in this book the family history of Boivin jewellery and traces the technical and artistic development of the company. René Boivin served his apprenticeship with his brother, already a talented goldsmith, before establishing his own firm. His wife, Jeanne Poiret, worked alongside him and, together with their daughter, took over the reins of the business upon her husband’s death, ensuring that the jewellery house remained in the hands of women.
Rarely signed, Boivin jewellery is characterised by a strong spirit of innovation. The pieces are voluminous, often inspired by Cubism and Art Deco, but also by antique or ‘barbarian’ jewellery. Ahead of its time, the company cultivated a taste for semi-precious stones and polychrome compositions. Articulated ornaments, such as the starfish or the chameleon, have remained legendary.
