Our important Adoration triptych is based around a central panel depicting the Adoration of the Shepherds, framed by Saint Thomas Aquinas and Saint Teresa. This beautifully executed painting, characteristic of the triptych tradition inherited from the Primitives, introduces colours and composition that reflect Italian and Spanish influences. The choice of a depiction of Adoration surrounded by Saint Thomas Aquinas and Saint Teresa is no coincidence; it is characteristic of the Counter-Reformation and was probably commissioned for a series of works of art.
It is interesting to note, through this painting, the porosity between the different European schools during the 16th and 17th centuries.
