Note. In Russia, glassmaking enjoyed a period of great influence between the second half of the XVIIIᵉ century and the XIXᵉ century, particularly under the impetus of the Imperial Manufactory in St Petersburg. Our pair of vases testifies to the technical mastery and imagination of the designers of the period: the use of tinted glass, in a shade of amethyst and complemented by neoclassically inspired ormolu decoration is typical of Russian production. Most of the pieces produced by the manufactory were destined for the imperial residences, but some could also be used as gifts in a diplomatic context.
