Description
EXCEPTIONAL Neo-Gothic oak canted CREDENCE circa 1830-1850.
Sculpture of great profusion, combining religious, royal and plant motifs: the upper panels depict the Annunciation scene; the left-hand panel depicts the Archangel Gabriel holding a phylactery, and the right-hand panel depicts the Virgin Mary at prayer. The central part is carved with the instruments of Christ's passion in a coat of arms. The sides are decorated with carved panels of Orbevois, Christ Triumphant, and a high quality, engraved and gilded wrought iron secret handle with the coat of arms of France, closed by a system of espagnolettes.
The daughter of King Louis-Philippe, Marie d'Orléans was an accomplished artist, a talented Romantic sculptor and a pupil of Ary Scheffer. On the ground floor of the Tuileries Palace in Paris, she had a very unusual study built for herself, which has become known as the "Gothic Studio" or "Gothic Salon".
There are several famous paintings immortalising this neo-Gothic cabinet:
The work by Prosper Lafaye (1842): entitled L'Atelier de la princesse Marie d'Orléans au palais des Tuileries (in the Louvre and the Château de Versailles)
The portrait by Ary Scheffer (1839): Entitled La Princesse Marie d'Orléans dans son atelier, this painting shows the princess working in the middle of her medieval décor.
This exceptionally well executed piece of furniture is reminiscent of the furniture that adorned the studio of the Princess of Orleans.
