Jesus and the Little Children is a major subject in Hippolyte Flandrin's career. The version painted in Rome between 1836 and 1838 is the largest canvas ever painted by the artist. This important work was subsequently exhibited at the Salon of 1839, where it helped to establish his reputation.
Born into a family of artists from Lyon, Auguste, Hippolyte and Paul Flandrin were among Ingres's disciples and contributed to the influence of French academic painting.
