Our interesting miniature is one of the rare representations of the couple formed
by Hyacinthe Rigaud and Marthe Elisabeth de Gouy. The painter poses here wearing a turban
with a turban, as in the self-portrait in the Musée de Perpignan.
In 1703, Rigaud undertook to marry Marie-Catherine Chastillon, the daughter of an
of a parliamentary prosecutor, in a contract signed by the Duc de Noailles and Jules
Hardouin-Mansart, Superintendent of the King's Buildings, appear as signatories.
signatories. The inventory of the groom's collection, drawn up for the occasion, lists
original paintings by Rubens, Van Dyck, Jordaens, Rembrandt and Veronese.
Veronese. The couple promised to celebrate their union as soon as possible.
However, despite the considerable sum of money provided by the bride, they decided to
to break off their engagement only a few months later, "agreeing

Elisabeth de Gouy, who had been widowed.
A portrait in Rigaud's hand, showing Marthe Elisabeth de Gouy, Jean
Le Juge and their daughter, is kept at the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa),
