Our painting represents the Incredulity of Saint Thomas. This subject has inspired many painters through its dramatic tension, characterised by Saint Thomas hesitating to touch the wounds of Christ, while around them, observation takes hold. This theme was particularly exploited during the Baroque period, which saw great potential for chiaroscuro, both in the scene itself and in its depiction. Christ is both marked by the wounds he received on the cross, dead from them, and yet very much alive in the presence of Saint Thomas. Our
composition is close to the works of the Genoese Baroque of the first half of the 17th century, and more particularly to the work of Gioacchino Assereto.
