The Battle of the Amalecites
Original canvas
Height : 104 cm
Width : 148 cm
From the book of Exodus 17.8.16
The battle against the Amalekites is an important episode in the history of the people of Israel, recounted in the Old Testament. Shortly after leaving Egypt, as the Hebrews travelled through the desert, the tribe of the Amalekites attacked the stragglers among the people, for no apparent reason.
Under Moses' orders, Joshua led the Israelite soldiers into battle. During the battle, Moses stood on a hill, holding the rod of God in his hands. As long as he raised his arms, Israel had the advantage, but when he lowered them, the Amalekites dominated. Seeing this, Aaron and Hur supported his arms until sunset, allowing Israel to win.
This battle became a symbol of faith, perseverance and mutual support. It showed that victory depended not only on military strength, but above all on trust in God and the unity of the people. Above left, Aaron and Hur support Moses' hands.
