Note: Adriaen van Stalbernt was a Flemish painter trained in Antwerp.
Adriaen van Stalbernt was a Flemish painter trained in Antwerp, a city that was one of the most active centres of European painting at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. Awarded a master's degree at the Saint Luke's Guild in Antwerp in 1610, he spent time in England, working for the court of James I, before returning to his native city. His work is characterised by his dual skills, which were rare at the time: he excelled in both landscape and figure painting, which enabled him to tackle mythological and allegorical subjects with ease, in which landscape and figures intertwine harmoniously.
The subject of the present panel, Minerva visiting the nine Muses on Mount Helicon, belongs to the mythological iconography dear to Flemish painters of the 17th century. Taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses, this episode recounts the visit of Minerva, goddess of wisdom and the arts, to the Muses gathered on Mount Helicon, a sacred mountain in Boeotia renowned for its inspirational springs. The theme, which was particularly popular with a humanist and literate clientele, gave the painter the opportunity to depict a lush Arcadian landscape populated by graceful figures, a skilful exercise in virtuosity characteristic of the Flemish school.
