Our painting is based on a composition in a different format by Alessandro
by Alessandro Varatori in the Castello Sforzesco in Milan, which is itself largely
inspired by a composition by Titian. This work is known from the engraving by
by Jacob Matham after Titian, circa 1599/1603, in the Rijksmuseum
RP-P-OB 27.211. Alessandro Varotari was a Venetian Baroque painter. The works of the first
