TAPIS AU POINT DE LA SAVONNERIE France Late 19th century Wool velvet on cotton backing Inspired by the cartoons of Charles Le Brun, the carpets commissioned by Colbert for Louis XIV, for the Louvre Palace and for the Palace of Versailles. A lilac field decorated with garlands of finely drawn polychrome cordons of flowers and foliage framing a central medallion in the shape of a rectangular carpet inlaid with a medallion with a crown of ivory flowers and an emerald green open umbrella adorned with a second crown of flowers in pastel tones, framed by four spandrels with lyres. Reserves and compartments with twisted branches of acanthus leaves adorned with wreaths of laurel leaves and double cords with multicoloured garlands of flowers. The terminal border is decorated with rows of polychrome flowers. 500 x 400 cm
