Mathieu BEFORT known as BEFORT JEUNE (1813-1880) after Charles CRESSENT (1685-1768), attributed to PAIR OF HIGH FURNITURE In amaranth veneer, opening by one leaf, with rich ormolu and chased ornamentation such as mascarons, dolphins, foliage scrolls and fleurons. The sides are decorated with medallions with royal profiles. The upper part has a doucine. Work in the style of the early 18th century. Height 141 cm, Width 84 cm, Depth 38 cm Renowned Parisian cabinetmaker of the Second Empire, specialising in furniture in the style of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The son of Jean-Baptiste Béfort, he ran a large workshop on rue Neuve-Saint-Gilles in Paris and was renowned for the quality of his marquetry and bronzes. He won a medal at the 1844 Industrial Exhibition and was a supplier to Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie.
