Details.
This commode illustrates the pronounced taste of 18th century connoisseurs for lacquer effects, the refinement of which was then associated with the luxury of Far Eastern products. Made in European lacquer, it testifies to the remarkable mastery of Parisian cabinet-makers, who were able to adapt and reinterpret oriental processes in order to meet an ever-increasing demand for precious furniture using imported products, particularly through haberdashery dealers.
Thus, European lacquer decoration offered a refined alternative to imported lacquer panels, the supply of which remained costly and uncertain. Specialist workshops developed their own sophisticated techniques, enabling them to produce deep, glossy surfaces embellished with landscapes, picturesque scenes or ornamental motifs inspired by Asian models.
This chest of drawers is representative of the luxury Parisian furniture produced in the 1750s and 1760s, a period when the craze for chinoiserie and lacquerware reached its peak.
