Provenance : - James Hayllar, Castle Priory, Wallington, circa 1875-1899, label on reverse - Arthur Tooth and Sons Gallery, London, label on reverse James Hayllar was a talented English painter specialising in genre scenes and portraits. and portraits, in which he liked to depict himself and his family in his in his paintings. He was the father of five children, four of whom were also brilliant painters. brilliant painters. Our work is an important composition. in the foreground could be his granddaughter, accompanied by her grandparents in the kitchen of the family home in Wallington. A regular painter, Hayllar sent his work assiduously to the Royal Academy. His paintings were much appreciated by his contemporaries and some of his used for publicity purposes. As the label on the reverse attests, this painting came from the famous Arthur Tooth and Sons Gallery in London.
