Description
Based on ANTIQUE, by the artist Primaticcio Sleeping Ariadne Large group in patinated bronze Mechanical reduction stamp COLLAS Height: 62 cm; Width: 80 cm History : Based on the Antique preserved in the Vatican. This is a reproduction of the marble sculpture in the Vatican Museum, made using the process of Achille Collas in association with the foundryman Ferdinand Barbedienne in 1838 (Stamp and signature on the back at the bottom). The sculpture taken as the original is in the gallery of statues in the Belvedere Palace. It is itself a Roman copy of a Greek original from the 2nd century BC. It was acquired by Pope Julius II in 1512. François I commissioned Le Primaticcio to make another reproduction (using moulds) of this Belvedere marble for the Château de Fontainebleau, where the bronze still stands.
