Pierre-Philippe THOMIRE (1751-1843), after
PAIR OF ANDIRONS WITH SPHINXES
In chased, gilded and patinated bronze. The sphinxes lie on an oblong base decorated with a mask of Apollo flanked by horns of plenty and flowers, set in foliage and, on the sides, a radiating star. They stand on four tapered legs decorated with twisted gadroons.

These andirons are reminiscent of several late 18th-century examples attributed to the bronziers Pierre Gouthière or Pierre-Philippe Thomire, based on a drawing by the architect François-Joseph Bélanger, now in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France.
