*Isaac II Angel was Byzantine emperor from 1185 to 1195 and from 1203 to 1204. He was the son of Andronic Ducas Angel and Euphrosyne Kastamonites and a great-grandson of Alexis I Comnenus. Little is known about his youth. In 1185 he came to prominence as the result of a prophecy when he was suspected of treason by Andronic I Comnenus. Managing to escape, Isaac Angel provoked a vast popular movement in his favour and against the increasingly violent regime of Andronic, who was overthrown and torn to pieces, while Isaac II became emperor without really having wanted it, which weakened him from the outset. As soon as he assumed the throne, revolts multiplied on various fronts, in addition to external threats such as the Normans, which he had difficulty repelling.
