Description
Roullet Decamps, late 19th – early 20th century, Seated Smoking Monkey, Automaton (prototype or mould?) No. 20 A seated monkey smokes peacefully. Air was drawn in through the arm and the smoke emerged from the mouth Movements: the head moves forwards and backwards; the eyelids, lower jaw and upper lip move, revealing the teeth. The right arm moves whilst holding the cigarette. The head is made of ceramic with an access hatch at the back. The body is made of wood and metal with a mechanism covered by a piece of boiled cardboard marked ‘20’ in several places. Winding mechanism on the side with a removable key – on/off pull tab on the back – Not tested (no key) but otherwise in good condition – H 37 cm Base dimensions – 13 x 20 cm Sold as is.
