Description
Roullet Decamps, late 19th – early 20th century, The Smoking Monkey, Automata (prototype or mould?) No. 12 A seated monkey smokes peacefully. Air was drawn in through the arm and the smoke came out through the mouth. Movements: the head moves forwards and backwards; the eyelids, lower jaw and upper lip move, revealing the teeth. The right arm, holding the cigarette holder, moves. The head is made of ceramic with an access hatch at the back. The body is made of wood and metal with a mechanism covered by a piece of boiled cardboard marked ‘12’ in several places, including what was to become the access hatch for the blower system.
