EXCEPTIONAL, TABRIZ RUG (North-West Iran, imperial workshop, circa 1965–1970)
Prayer-shaped carpet in wool and silk.
Midnight blue field decorated with a scene of earthly paradise, featuring a wavy mihrab (the gateway to heaven), adorned with a richly flowered Tree of Life in silk, surrounded by finely rendered birds in silk.
Double pale pink spandrels decorated with scrollwork of fine, curving stems and flowering palmettes.
Four borders, the main one in pale pink featuring an interlaced pattern of floral bulbs surrounded by garlands of polychrome flowers and foliage.
High-quality ‘Kork’ lambswool velvet, selected in spring, with silk flowers and birds, on a cotton backing.
Dimensions 197 x 141 cm.
Density approximately 8,000 knots per dm², remarkable fineness.
