Description
Martin Nicolas DELAPORTE
A Louis XVI-style bergère, in grey-stained wood, moulded and carved with scrollwork and a canopy featuring rosette-shaped joints, with tapered, fluted and serrated legs.
It bears the stamp ‘M Delaporte’, for Martin Nicolas DELAPORTE, who was granted master status in 1765.
The brother of Antoine Nicolas, and like him a chairmaker, he worked on Rue des Filles-Dieu, perhaps in the workshop of his uncle Martin Delaporte, whose business he had taken over. Given that the latter died in 1756, the Louis XVI chairs marked ‘M Delaporte’ would suggest that Martin Nicolas used the same stamp to sign his works.
