2-day chronometer, signed ‘Porthouse & French Makers to the Admiralty, 16 Northampton Square’. London, 7739’, c. 1868.
Silvered dial, Roman numerals, power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock, seconds at 6 o’clock, gold hour and minute hands, blued steel seconds hand.
Classic double-plate movement with tool-reversal decoration, cylindrical pillars, fusée and chain, detent escapement, blued steel cylindrical balance spring, No. 7739 stamped on the reverse of the dial plate; brass gimbal suspension, polished mahogany case with an inspection cover featuring a coat of arms, brass handles and reinforcements, and an applied ivorine plate bearing the manufacturer’s name ‘7739 Porthouse & French London’.

Successors to Thomas Porthouse (c. 1794–1860), Porthouse & French were active from 1862, when they exhibited ‘chronometers and watches for the domestic and foreign markets’ at the London International Exhibition.
