Small DIPTYCH DIAL in the ‘axe’ style, unsigned, Germany, 17th century.
Elephantidae ivory (cracks)
Faces Ia and IIb are blank except for a double line engraved along the edges. Face Ib features, within a recessed area, a fitting for the axis wire, which can be positioned to indicate latitude against a scale of 42°, 45° and 48°, or set perpendicular to level the instrument. Side IIa is engraved with the hour scale for the three latitudes around a compass (paper replaced, needle missing).
6.3 x 4.8 x 1.2 cm – Weight 60.42 g.
