Description
A diptych timepiece signed ‘Fait Et Inue[nit] Par Charles Bloud ADieppe’, third quarter of the 17th century. Ivory and silver. Face Ia: 24-hour equinoctial dial (1–12 × 2) marked in thirty-minute intervals, surrounding a polar dial marked in single hours (8–12–4). The edges and the area around the dials are decorated with small stems characteristic of Dieppe dials. Side Ib: A latitude scale for positioning the lid, decorated with small stems; in a central panel, a two-movement volvelle comprising a calendar of months, a double hour scale (1–12 × 2), a scale for the age of the moon (1–30) with an index to align it with the calendar when the instrument is used as a nocturlabe, a moving element indicating the phase of the moon and the time of night, with a delicate foliage decoration. Upper attachment for the gnomon shaft. Face IIa: Hour scale for a horizontal sundial (6–12–6) and lower attachment for its gnomon shaft; a compass with an eight-point compass rose and, between the points, the names of several towns with their latitudes; a removable scale for an analemmatic sundial; in a recess on the right, a bracket for securing the cover at the correct angle for the latitude. Side IIb: Removable disc (currently fixed in place) engraved with a calendar of days and months for positioning the analemmatic dial on side IIa around a ‘Morland’-type perpetual calendar, which allows the dates of Sundays to be found throughout the year. The sides of the instrument are unadorned except for a small recess on the left-hand side of Face II, fitted with a hinged cover to protect a gnomon (present) for the equinoctial dial on Face Ia. 7.1 x 6.1 x 1.3 cm.
