Universal equinoctial ring, unsigned, England, late 17th century.
Brass.
On one side, the ring representing the meridian is engraved with a scale from 0 to 90°, graduated in 1° increments. The suspension ring can be adjusted against this scale according to the latitude at which the instrument is to be used. Opposite this scale, with its zero point positioned on the 6 o’clock mark of the hour scale engraved on the equatorial ring and thus on the axis of the bridge supporting the gnomon at the aperture, there is a double scale for the obliquity of the ecliptic, 23.5°, graduated in 1° increments towards the south and north. The reverse side of the meridian bears a nautical square used with a rod placed at its apex. The equatorial ring is engraved with an undivided hour scale marked III–XII–IX. The bridge bears the adjustable sighting device, aligned with a scale of months engraved on one side, whilst the reverse side bears a second scale for the obliquity of the ecliptic, 23.5° north–south.
Diameter 9.8 cm.
A classic instrument, yet made extraordinary by the two scales for the obliquity of the ecliptic, the function of which remains to be explained.
