Description
Hexagonal silver and brass equinoctial dial, signed ‘Johann Willebrand in Auspurg’, with its case, c. 1700.
Octagonal plate incorporating a four-point compass with a removable base graduated into four quadrants of degrees for adjustment to magnetic declination, with a steel needle. The rim of the plate is engraved with sixteen points of the compass, and features the equinoctial ring engraved with the hours 3–12–9, complete with its gnomon, the arc for latitudes and the spirit level for levelling the instrument.
Shark-skin case (showing some wear) lined with velvet (worn), with a silver plate in the lid engraved with the names and latitudes of seventy towns in Europe.
Dial diameter 6.6 cm.
Case 7.8 x 6.8 x 2 cm.
