Description
Equinoxial dial in gilded brass and silver, signed ‘L. Gräsl’, second half of the 18th century.
Octagonal plate incorporating a silver four-point compass with a magnetic declination of approximately 17° west (a value roughly correct for the 1760s to 1780s), with blued steel hour markers. The rim of the plate is engraved with a symmetrical foliage motif and features the equinoctial ring engraved with the hours III–XII–IX, complete with its gnomon, the arc for latitudes and the spirit level for levelling the instrument. Diameter 7.6 cm.
A fine, large example of the work of the Augsburg dial-maker Lorenz Grassl (1740–1805).
