Description
Portable vertical brass sundial, unsigned, England?, late 18th/early 19th century. A textured plate with a suspension mechanism, engraved on the obverse with a scale of months and on the reverse with a curved scale of hours. A pointer pivoting at the centre of the plate can be positioned over the desired month so that a folding gnomon indicates the time on the reverse side. Total height including suspension: 7.8 cm; width: 4.4 cm. PROVENANCE The Time Museum, Rockford, Illinois, Inventory No. 722. Sotheby’s New York auction, 14 October 2004, lot 764. An interesting and original dial, perhaps inspired by the so-called ‘ham’ dial discovered at Herculaneum a few years earlier. Expert: Anthony TURNER
